The Conversation You Have With Yourself Sets the Energy of Your Life

You spend more time talking to yourself than to anyone else on earth. Think about that. The longest conversation of your life is the one happening inside your head, right now.

So here is a question worth sitting with: is that voice kind to you?

Mine was not, for a long time. I used to catch myself saying things I would never say to a friend. “You blew it.” “Who do you think you are?” “You should have done better.” And I wondered why my energy was low. How could it be anything else? I was living inside a voice that kept tearing me down.

In my book Fostering Energy, I write about the power of words and thoughts. Everything is energy, and that includes the words you aim at yourself. Your thoughts are not just passing weather. They are the climate you live in. When the inner conversation is harsh, your whole body knows it. Your shoulders climb. Your stomach tightens. Your energy shrinks.

Kindness, I have learned, is not just something we give to other people. It starts inward. Wayne Dyer said you cannot give away what you do not have. If your inner tank is full of criticism, that is what spills out. Fill it with kindness instead, and watch what changes.

Here is the practice. It is simple, and simple works.

First, notice. You cannot change a pattern you do not see. Just start catching the voice. “There it is again, the critic.”

Second, question it. Ask: would I say this to someone I love? If not, it does not deserve a home in your head either.

Third, replace it with something true and kind. Not fake cheerfulness. Real kindness. Instead of “You are falling apart,” try “You are doing your best with a lot on your plate.” Instead of “Nobody cares,” try “I matter, and my energy matters.”

You will not get it right every time. I still catch my critic running the show on hard days. The goal is not perfection. The goal is noticing sooner, and choosing kinder sooner.

Here is what I can promise. The way you talk to yourself becomes the energy you bring everywhere else. Change the conversation inside, and the whole room changes. Your family feels it. Your work feels it. You feel it.

You are matter, because you matter. And the first person who needs to believe that is you.
