You Are the Thermostat, Not the Thermometer
Walk into a room and you can feel it before anyone speaks. Something is off, or something is warm. Nobody had to say a word. You just knew.
That is energy. And here is the part most of us forget: you are not just reading the room. You are setting it.
I used to think I had to match whatever energy came my way. Someone was tense, I got tense. Someone was short with me, I got shorter. I was a thermometer — just reflecting the temperature around me. Then I learned something that changed everything. You can be the thermostat instead. You get to set the temperature.
This is one of the core ideas in my book, Fostering Energy. Everything is energy, and we are responsible for the energy we bring into every room. We have a front door sign in our home that says, ‘Please be responsible for the energy you bring into this home.’ I put it there because I needed the reminder as much as anyone else.
Here is how it works in real life. This morning, my daughter was rushing and stressed. Old me would have matched that stress and added my own. Instead, I took one slow breath and asked her what she needed. That is it. One breath. The whole house felt different.
You do not have to be perfect at this. You will still have days where someone’s mood gets under your skin. That is human. The practice is just noticing. When you catch yourself matching someone else’s frustration, pause and ask: what energy do I want to bring in right now?
Three small things help me stay on the thermostat side:
One: name it. When you feel the tension rising, name it silently. ‘That is their stress, not mine.’ Naming it keeps you from absorbing it.
Two: breathe first, speak second. One slow breath creates a gap between what hits you and how you respond. In that gap, you get your power back.
Three: choose kindness anyway. Choosing kindness over being right has saved me more than once. You do not have to agree with someone to bring warmth into the room.
Here is the beautiful part. When you set the temperature, other people start adjusting to you. Calm is contagious. Kindness spreads. You have probably seen it happen — one genuinely warm person changes the whole tone of a gathering.
So today, here is my challenge to you. Walk into one room today and decide before you enter: what energy am I bringing? Then bring it. Not to control anyone. Just because you can.
You are matter, because you matter. And your energy matters more than you know.
